In 1967 Dr. Wolfgang Baumann joined the bank as general partner (until 2002) and brought the technical progress. His brother Niklaus Baumann succeeds him in 1980 and remains a general partner until 2013. In 1984 the name was changed to Baumann & Cie, Banquiers.

The most important participations include Trafina Privatbank AG, Basel (since 2004), the real estate companies St. Jakob AG and Rotbuche AG, and the investment company Providentia AG.

Philosophy and Strategy
In 2017, the partners have dealt intensively with the legal form and the entire structure of the group. The partners decided to stay with the actual legal form of the company which is adequate in the present time. Because of this restructuring, there has also been a change at the partners level. Mr. Rolf Bühler, a partner since 2012, decided after six years to face new professional challenges. The partners greatly regret this step, as it means that succession planning must be even more focused. Due to the in-depth analysis of the strategy, decisions were also made to sell various participations.
The organizational chart is clear and accessible. On top are the managing partners followed by the internal audit. The next line is the operational management and the credit committee. The four units which follow are the investment, customer and IT unit, the trading unit, including the external asset managers, the processing, marketing and legal & compliance unit and the Zurich branch.
The general principles of the bank are “our vision, our values.”
Baumann & Cie, advises and accompanies their customers personally and individually over generations in all financial matters.

The investments are liquid, tradable at any time and meet Baumann’s qualitative requirements regarding excellence, liquidity, and transparency.
Investment Process
The investment committee is headed by Mr. Daniel O.A. Rüedi. In their monthly meetings, the committee examines and analyzes the different asset classes, regions, and currencies. A fundamental analysis serves as a basis for decision making.
In addition to the analysis of the real and monetary economic situation, the interest rate environment, the valuation of the markets, market technology, and market psychology are assessed in the context of the investment process.
Risk Management
Risk management is an essential part of the bank’s policy. The aim is to improve profitability, increase the bank’s value and preserve resources. The Managing Partners are responsible for the overall risk policy. The main risks include the credit risk, the market risk, the liquidity risk, the operational risk, and the reputational risk.

We are a fully independent boutique law firm. That’s why we don’t have any cooperation agreements with the banks.
Few banks do not disclose their Annual Reports to the public. Therefore, we collected reliable information on a best-efforts basis. We renounced to collecting information from unreliable sources. Until today, Swiss law does not impose the duty of publication to the banks as it is the case in the EU. Therefore, for a few banks, the information from the annual reports was not summarized and published.
There are some smaller banks without a rating. It makes no sense for them to apply for a rating because they are not involved in the lending business. If the bank has no rating, it’s not automatically a negative point. There are excellent private banks without a rating.
