Van Lanschot Kempen is the oldest independent financial institution in the Netherlands. The roots of Van Lanschot Kempen go back to the year 1737. On July 22, 1737, Cornelis van Lanschot recorded his first colonial trade purchase in his order book. Van Lanschot Kempen is operating under the strong brand names Van Lanschot, Evi van Lanschot, and Kempen.
Van Lanschot Bank’s clients are wealthy Dutch and Belgian with a minimum of EUR 1 million investable assets.
Philosophy and Strategy

The asset management services take good care of the client’s wealth. An asset manager is managing the client’s assets, and independent investment decisions are made within the predefined framework. The investment process is thorough and structured in which Van Lanschot Bank uses the expertise of the sister company Kempen Capital Management.
With investment advice, the client makes his own decisions. Van Lanschot Bank is a sparring partner who provides the client with own research as well as research from others. The main markets are Dutch and Belgium, but the advisors have an international scope, and their playing field is the whole world. The advisor is sharing visions and ideas with the client, and the client can rely on excellent and careful execution.
The client makes his own decisions and places and trades the orders directly with the contact person at the bank. The client can expect an excellent execution both in administrative tasks and order processing.
Van Lanschot Bank offers their clients standard banking services, and of course, the client can make their payments online. A special service of the bank is fiduciary deposits. A certain amount is placed with one or more foreign bank on behalf of the Bank but at the client’s risk and expense.

Risk management supports the clients, other stakeholders and the front office in ensuring that the risks incurred are controlled and conform with the legal requirements and the risk appetite. The main risks are the credit risk, the market risk, the operational risk, the settlement risk, the CVA (credit value adjustment) risk, the strategic risk, the interest rate risk, the liquidity riks, the securitization risk, the compliance risk, and the financial reporting risk.
Van Lanschot Kempen aims to have a transparent and simple balance sheet. Lending activities occur mainly in the private banking segment. The Executive Board prepares each year the risk appetite statement which translates the risk appetite into strategic limits. The Supervisory Board reviews the development of the risk profile twice a year.
The risk management framework identifies and analyses the risks at an early stage. The risks are mitigated and monitored, and adequate internal reporting systems and control procedures are the key elements of the risk management framework.
The risk management framework is based on three lines of defense principles; day-to-day responsibility for risk control lies with the front office, the first line of defense; Compliance, Group Risk Management and Finance, Reporting & Control form the second line of defense; Group Audit forms the third line of defense and is responsible for performing independent audits on the risk framework.
Van Lanschot Kempen Foundation supports community projects that help create a better world for future generations. Over the years employees participated in over 20 different projects. The foundation’s activities focus on different themes: talent development, art & culture, health, sport, and financial education. The aim is to make a positive impact on people who need the support.
